All matter consists of atoms, and all atoms consist of particles. At the center of an atom, for example, is a proton that has a positive charge. In most elements, the proton is partnered with a neutron, which has a neutral charge. Whirling around both the proton and neutron is an electron, a negatively charged particle that travels so fast it appears to have formed a shell around the center.

These particles, however, are not the end of the road, because they have particles within them called quarks (not be confused with quark that’s found in dairy products.)

The term Quark was coined by a fellow named Murray Gell-Mann, a physicist, back in the 1960’s. Quarks also have a positive and negative charge…as does our psyche.

The positive side of your personality is at the center of your universe. The negative side is a creation of your brain, and like the electron, it whirls around your positive self so fast, you can lose touch with your center.

Your positive and negative self, like the proton and electron, is also comprised of other elements. In physics, cyclotrons smash particles into one-another to learn about their inner structures.

Luckily, you don’t have to be concerned about crashing your thoughts into one another in order to decipher what’s in them, because the work has been done for you.
