We all know how it feels to be stressed and anxious, but what we may not know is what happens inside our head that causes us to be stressed and anxious. Stress and anxiety is a symptom of…the chatter-in-our-head. You know that voice, the one that says, “You have no control and that the worst is going to happen,” which raise a question. Where does this negative-chatter come from, after all, it’s not a conscious creation.

Those who say, “If you hear voices…something may be wrong with you”...are wrong. We all hear voices because this is how our brain communicates with us, however, there’s a voice that’s more pronounced than the others. It’s also the gatekeeper of our beliefs and will sound the alarm (chatter) when our beliefs are threatened.

For example, let’s say job security is important to us; when out-of-the-blue we get slammed with a layoff notice. Fully aware that money is tight and that we hate looking for a job…the chatter-in-our-head will bring-on the stress by propelling us into the future and beating us up with…what if questions we can’t answer. “What if you can’t find another job? What if you can’t pay your bills. What if? What if?”

If we don’t take control and bring our attention into the present moment and fill it with possibilities, the chatter-in-our head will fill it for us with scenarios that point to one thing…failure. Knowing is the easy part, the challenge is…doing something about it.
